White Baldy and Lake Peak - Winter has arrived

Tom, Andy and I headed up the White Pine Drainage with hopes of standing on top of some of the higher peaks in the area.  Andy convinced us to head over to White Baldy promising a good scramble and ski descent.  We stuck to the road that passes under Red Baldy and then aimed for the low point on the ridge heading up to WB.

As promised, the ridge provided plenty of good rock moves sprinkled with a bit of exposure.  The 50 mph wind gusts and large amounts of snow in my unprotected eyes were an added bonuses.

From the summit we headed for a north facing gully that dropped us into the Red Pine Drainage.  Although coverage is still spotty at best, the firm base of snow keep us from hitting too many rocks.  We debated heading over to the Pfeif but decided on Lake Peak instead to ski the classic Lake coulior.

As expected, Lake Coulior skied great. On our approach we saw another party breaking trail up a NE facing line that starts just N of the Lake Peak summit.  With a skinner in, we raced up it and found more consistent dense powder.  Not a bad way to end a vacation week.

Citizen's Series #2 and a Mt. Raymond bail

Race #2 turned out to be a good event despite the cold rain.  Getting out of the car in the rain at 9000' felt unpleasant but once everyone got going it wasn't too bad.  That's one major benefit of working out with others.  Everyone's excitement turns what would typically be horrible into a fitness gaining good time.   Race #3 goes down on 12/18 at 7:00 PM, put it on your calendar.

This morning Jared and I headed up to foolishly attempt to ski Mt. Raymond.  After gaining the ridge that offers good views of Raymond we were once again reminded of how boney south facing slopes are and turned around before committing to a long rocky walk.  The exit was interesting.  We found moose.
Not sure what Jared's doing, I think it's his moose mating call.  It didn't work.
And a ton of bushes...
Look close, it goes as far as the eye can see
Although getting out was still quite enjoyable, I think we'll stick to areas with a little better coverage for the time being.

Red Stack, Red Baldy, N. Superior - Finally!

It's been to long since I've been able to get some touring in.  Luckily, Teague and Andy were available Friday morning and we found some amazing snow in the White Pine drainage.  The chutes were wind buffed and in primo condition.

Andy higher on Red Stack
A little higher.
The top couple hundred feet of Red Stack were not in.  This was quite obvious but there was no discussion, we just slowly picked our way to the top.  Although it didn't add any more skiing, topping out was worth it.  It's all about the up anyway, right?

From there it was a quick skin on the road over to the base of White Baldy where we chose the right most chute.  Again, the skiing was far better than expected, as was the little scramble to the top.

Luke Nelson was in town Saturday and he rounded up a crew to head out for a little exercise.  We were 7 deep (Andy D., Luke, Tanner, Andy, Toph, Chad B. and myself) and headed over to N. Superior.  Variable snow was challenging in race gear but enjoyable nonetheless. Being with good company in the mountains really a treat.  I'm not sure why everyone doesn't do it.

In other, non-skiing related, news I recently got engaged! It's looking like Dec 21st is the day with a post wedding celebration sometime in the spring.  If you want an invite to the party, let me know your address and you may or may not get one.  You'll have to get passed the strict screening process...
